Strategies Unlimited projects packaged LED market to hit $25.9B in 2018

Strategies Unlimited projects packaged LED market to hit $25.9B in 2018
Kicking off the 15th anniversary Strategies in Light Conference in Santa Clara, California, Strategies Unlimited analyst Katya Evstratyeva opened the conference Investor Forum with a preview of the results of the firm's latest packaged LED market research. There was moderate growth in the 7% range from 2012 to $14.4B (billion) in 2013, but the forward projection calls for double-digit growth over the next five years to $25.9B. General lighting already dominates consumption and will reach 57% of the packaged LED market in 2018.

Strategies Unlimited analyst Katya Evstratyeva
For comparison of the latest data, you may want to refer to the presentations made at Strategies in Light 2013. The firm updated much of the prior data including the release of the latest top-ten list of LED manufacturers for 3013:
Nichia
Samsung
Osram Opto Smeiconductors
LG Innotek
Seoul Semi
Cree
Philips Lumileds
TG
Sharp
Everlight
There was little change in the rankings, although Cree moved up a spot while Lumileds dropped a bit. Still, the changes were relatively minor in a time when LED manufacturers from around the globe are making extraordinary efforts to increase sales.
Evstratyeva discussed the top markets for LEDs, starting with backlighting for large displays including TVs and computer monitors. The LED revenue for that market will decrease by about a third over five years from the $2.6B level in 2013 as devices use fewer LEDs and the LED component prices drop. Likewise, the mobile market will drop from $2.6B in 2013 to $2.3B in 2018 with growth in LEDs for camera flash applications mitigating some of the impact of lower-cost LEDs used to light the screens.
Automotive usage of LEDs, meanwhile, will experience what Evstratyeva called "slow steady growth," going from $1.4B in 2013 to 2.3B in 2018. The growth will comes as automakers transition to LED headlamps on mainstream models and from increased usage of LED lighting in cabins as a stylistic feature that can drive sales. The signage market is also projected to grow from $1.8B to $2.4B in LED revenue over the five-year period, driven by the China market.
Still, it was lighting that was the most compelling portion of the opening presentation. And the lighting market brought an interesting pie chart to the fore. In terms of where LEDs used in the lighting market are manufactured, the US stands out at 31%. Evstratyeva noted a major US company that is responsible for that stat. She didn't name Cree, but that company's focus on the lighting application has clearly paid off with it taking a leadership position in the fastest-growing application that consumes LEDs. Meanwhile, Japan produces 21% of the LEDs used in lighting and Korea is the source of 15%.
Evstratyeva also provided some details on sub-segments of the lighting market ranging from retrofit lamps to commercial fixtures to industrial luminaires. We will cover more of those details in a feature-length article in an upcoming issue of the magazine. But one point of interest is that higher-power LEDs will remain the dominant technology over the next five years in lighting applications even as the mid-power LEDs garner headlines. Both types of products will gain significant market share, but Strategies Unlimited is not projecting mid-power devices to take a dominant position.More information please visit www.greendyled.com

New Research Shows Negative Emotions can intensify under Bright Light

New Research Shows Negative Emotions can intensify under Bright Light
The next time you want to turn down the emotional intensity before making an important decision, you may want to dim the lights first.
A new study from the University of Toronto Scarborough shows that human emotion, whether positive or negative, is felt more intensely under bright light. Alison Jing Xu, assistant professor of management at UTSC and the Rotman School of Management, along with Aparna Labroo of Northwestern University, conducted a series of studies to examine the unusual paradox of lighting and human emotion.

“Other evidence shows that on sunny days people are more optimistic about the stock market, report higher wellbeing and are more helpful while extended exposure to dark, gloomy days can result in seasonal affective disorder,” says Xu. “Contrary to these results, we found that on sunny days depression-prone people actually become more depressed,” she says, pointing to peaks in suicide rates during late spring and summer when sunshine is abundant.
Xu and Labroo asked participants to rate a wide range of things—the spiciness of chicken-wing sauce, the aggressiveness of a fictional character, how attractive someone was, their feelings about specific words, and the taste of two juices—under different lighting conditions.
The results: under bright lights emotions are felt more intensely. In the brighter room participants wanted spicier chicken wing sauce, thought the fictional character was more aggressive, found the women more attractive, felt better about positive words and worse about negative words, and drank more of the “favourable” juice and less of the “unfavourable” juice.
Xu says the effect bright light has on our emotional system may be the result of it being perceived as heat, and the perception of heat can trigger our emotions. “Bright light intensifies the initial emotional reaction we have to different kinds of stimulus including products and people,” she says.
The majority of everyday decisions are also made under bright light. So turning down the light may help you make more rational decisions or even settle negotiations more easily.
“Marketers may also adjust the lightening levels in the retail environment, according to the nature of the products on sale,” says Xu. “If you are selling emotional expressive products such as flowers or engagement rings it would make sense to make the store as bright as possible.”
Xu notes the effect is likely to be stronger on brighter days around noon when sunlight is the most abundant and in geographic regions that experience sunnier rather than cloudier days.
The research is published in the current edition of the Journal of Consumer Psychology.

Philips Lumileds launches new lime LED and multi-emitter package, demos at SIL

Philips Lumileds launches new lime LED and multi-emitter package, demos at SIL

Philips Lumileds announced two new LED families leading into Strategies in Light 2014 (SIL) and is demonstrating its latest technology in an SIL booth with color-tunable technology front and center. The company has announced a 200 lm/W version of a lime-green LED in the Rebel ES family targeted at color-tunable solid-state lighting (SSL) developments. The company also added the Luxeon MZ LED family for directional applications that can deliver center beam candle power (CBCP) in the 50,000-cd range.
It was Lumiled's lime-green LED technology that in large part enabled the development of the color-tunable Philips Lighting Hue lamp. The lime color is closer than deep green to the black-body curve and the LEDs enable Hue to hit a range of white CCTs near the curve with CRI maintained in the 85 range.

"This really represents a new frontier in lighting, because Luxeon Rebel ES Lime emitters can be combined with other Rebel color and white emitters to achieve higher CRI and R9 combinations than any previous generation emitters or arrays," said Rahul Bammi, vice president of product management at Lumileds.
Lumileds uses a blue emitter with a proprietary lime phosphor to deliver an LED with efficacy far above what has been available in other green LEDs. The new Rebel ES lime LED hits new heights at 200 lm/W at a drive current of 350 mA and operating temperature of 85°C.
Lumileds said that the new LED can enable SSL products with CRI above 90 and R9 values for saturated red above 90. That quality level, especially at warmer CCTs, is again due to the lime color and the fact that it enables the use of more-efficient red LEDs that don't waste energy above the human sensitivity range.
On the SIL exhibit floor, Lumileds featured a demo that showed off the capabilities of the lime, red-orange, and royal-blue LED mix used in Hue. The booth also included a look at the company's product range including mid-power LEDs to chip-on-board (COB) products.
Lumileds Luxeon MZ
On the opening day of SIL, Lumileds announced the new Luxeon MZ series that is a follow-on to the Luxeon M. The four-emitter LED is in a traditional discrete package with a 4.2-mm light emitting surface (LES). For applications such as spot or down lights, the family spans the range of 600 to 1000 lm.
The Luxeon MZ LEDs are compatible with the Luxeon M family in terms of footprint and performance. But the new product is specifically designed to produce a narrow beam whereas the prior was intended for street lights and industrial applications.

"With the LUXEON MZ in combination with LUXEON M, designers can create two solutions with one optic and one PCB, thereby lowering overall costs," said Emmanuel Dieppedalle, senior vice president at Lumileds. "Our customers are already designing platforms with Luxeon M and Luxeon MZ to create multiple SKUs using less engineering resources."
The MZ family has a forward voltage of 11.2V. In an MR16 application, Lumileds said that the LED will deliver the aforementioned 50,000-cd CBCP. Lumileds will offer the products over the range of 2700 to 6500K CCT, and at 70, 80, and 90 CRI.(from http://www.ledsmagazine.com/)
