The various activities performed in a joinery require different illuminance levels. While 150 lux is enough at a steaming pit, 300 lux is needed at a frame saw and at a joiner's bench, 750 lux for veneering and polishing and at least 1,000 lux for quality control points. The more critical and finer the visual task, the higher the illuminance needs to be. Even so, care must be taken to avoid excessive differences in brightness in the room.

These requirements can be met by workplace-oriented general lighting. Recommended solutions are luminaires for three-band fluorescent lamps arranged in lines or continous rows. They need to satisfy the safety requirements for work premises where dust or an explosive atmosphere presents a hazard.

Where saw blades, router heads or drill bits are used or where work is inspected, additional light is provided by task luminaires - suspended ceiling luminaires, workplace luminaires or machine luminaires. Using electronic ballasts (EBs) to operate lamps prevents stroboscopic effects at machines with rotating parts, heightens the luminous efficacy of the lamps (three-band fluorescent lamps, compact fluorescent lamps) and lengthens their service life.

Suitable light colours are neutral white or warm white; where materials or work are examined for flaws, neutral white or daylight white are recommended. Lamps should have good or very good color rendering properties (for inspection work always grade Ra index ≥ 80): standard fluorescent lamps should not be used.(more information please visit www.greendyled.com)
